Publish Your Photography Book: Mary Virginia Swanson and Darius Himes on the Third Edition
This discussion with Mary Virginia Swanson, affectionally known by many in the photo community as Swanee, and Darius Himes on the occasion of the publication of Publish Your Photography Book, third edition.
Mary Virginia Swanson has served as Curator of Photography at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. She worked at The Friends of Photography in Carmel, California and in Special Projects at Magnum Photos. In 1990, she launched Swanstock, a unique agency managing licensing rights for fine art photographers. Since then, she has worked with individual photographers through her own consulting firm and more recently, partnered with La Luz Workshops in PUBLISH YOUR PHOTOGRAPHY BOOK: Understanding the Path to Bringing Your Photographic Project to Publication where Darius Himes was one of the noted professional speakers.
Darius Himes oversees a global team producing auctions and exhibition as the International Head of Photographs for famed auction house Christie’s since 2014. He was previously the director at Frankel Gallery in San Francisco and was a co-founder of Radius books, the publisher for the new edition of this book. We have known each other since many years ago at photo-eye Books where Darius took on the role of founding editor of the photo-eye Booklist. I watched this quarterly publication evolve over the years into a beautiful object worthy of the newsstand on par with many great contemporary art periodicals. The depth of the research included interview, book review, and articles including a multi-series with Himes and Swanson that lead us to this discussion today on Publish Your Photography Book Third Edition.
