This is a unique four-day workshop that incorporates the new technology of AI as a tool for communication an correspondence relating to your photographic project. The class is for the novice AI user and advanced amateurs and experienced photographers who would like to use AI in the course of planning a book project, their social media posts, correspondence, and project statements and book proposals.
Before class, students will be given assignments to prepare including preparing images to present in class, readings, and videos, as well as preparing your AI dashboard. The course will be part lecture/discussion and online participatory workshop primarily for those who want to refine their work, receive feedback on working projects and have a short-term or long-term goal of producing a book while utilizing AI as a helpful tool in the process.
By the end of the class, students should have an understanding of the basics of AI text creation and editing, image editing and sequencing, a working knowledge the photobook publishing world, Each student should be able make solid decisions about how to proceed with their own work.
All feedback is valuable and participants are highly encouraged to participate and provide feedback, commentary, and suggestions for fellow student’s projects.

Students will need to prepare 30-50 images for the first class and make revisions for the final day of class. They will also be provided with the tools to generate their own AI dashboard and encouraged to work with this tool for a presentation of their usage in the third class.
Participants may also begin work on a statement/artist proposal and budget (examples supplied after first class).
Finally, this workshop also includes access to Melanie’s collection of resource documents for a limited time during the course and after. Detailed instructions will be provided by Melanie prior to the first class including a pre-class survey, and request for image preview.

Melanie McWhorter
Melanie McWhorter is a Santa-Fe based consultant and bookseller. She managed the internationally recognized photo-eye Bookstore until 2016. Melanie then started her own online bookshop and consulting practice where, among other advice, she speaks with artists about bringing their photobook projects to fruition. She has gained a reputation as a knowledgeable photography professional and has been interviewed and written about photography in numerous print and online publications including Lenscratch, PDN, and NPR’s The Picture Show.
Caleb Cain Marcus
Caleb is based in Brooklyn. He is part of Luminosity Lab design studio and Workshop Arts publishing. His work is in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Getty Museum.
